Retraining a picky eater

Thanks to my friend, Stephanie, we have come up with a new rule to attempt to expand the list of things Scott will eat beyond grilled cheese, eggs and dino buddies. The rule is every day he has to try 2 tiny bites of something new. If he is not willing to try the new food of the day, then no juice or TV or Wii for the rest of the day. No juice is a cruel form of torture in Scott's world. So far some of the things he has tried include apples (he liked that as long as he could dip it in cinnamon and sugar), spinach (he ate 2 leaves and said it was ok, but didn't want more), a granola bar, and -- drum roll please -- PIZZA! Yes, tonight he ate 3 bites of pizza and although he didn't want more, he said he 'kinda liked it'. That is a HUGE victory! Call me crazy, but with this picky eater I look forward to the day when he will be able to put away an entire pizza on his own...

That is amazing...PIZZA! He will turn it around and when he is a teenager you will not even believe that he was once a picky eater. It is amazing how you can motivate children when you find out what they value...it worked at our house the boys now eat meat.

I feel your pain! My Tabitha is so picky that she basically lives on fruit, bread and milk alone! It's impossible to even get her to TRY anything new - including stuff like candy or junk kids usually love. My rule is that she has to eat something green everyday - but maybe your two bite rule is better because then at least they branch out! I'll have to try it.

If he can't polish off the pizza himself, Josh will be a good friend and do it for him. Seriously, I think this is great because it's working, and that's my theory of parenting. Do what works for you, even if it appears to the world that your child only has one shirt for a couple of months. Doesn't hurt anything but does keep the rest of his clothes nice and is a hilarious story, unlike wearing a different shirt each day.

Brilliant! I'm going to have to try this idea. Can you imagine, one day we may be able to make one dinner and have our children eat it, all of it, and then resort to a bowl of cereal later if they are still hungry. In time we will be worried that we'll never be able to keep these boys full!
